Community Advisory/Yarning Groups
The formation of the Community Advisory/Yarning Groups are a result of an outcome of conversations with community members and service providers by recognising that people want to be the masters of their own destiny. To have the support and information available to them in their own neighbourhoods with their peers, and not having to outsource to services, is invaluable.
The role of the Community groups is to provide informed advice for people requiring assistance with issues that are affecting the individual and /or their local community. Sorting out minor issues before they become major ones and problematic.
People are their own experts and given the opportunity they will come up with solutions with a bit of support and guidance. This will encourage people to be more accountable for their own lives without the need for interventions, just guidance.
If the Yarning Group is unable to come up with solutions, these issues can be brought to the attention of the Service Advisory Group to see if they can provide alternative solutions, recommendations, or referrals.
These Community groups will be voluntary and operate with care and sensitivity as most people that need assistance are vulnerable.
This is also an opportunity to be involved in working closely with local Community Services providers while learning about how the community and providers can assist each other. This style of group will guide service provision in the direction where it’s most needed.
Everyone has a voice.
There are guidelines to direct Community Group members on how the groups are to be run for best effect and will be provided to the individual groups when they are being formed, including:
- A consent to share information for when services are asked to provide support.
- A structured protocol.
- Guidance with an experienced Community Services worker to help get things started.
